By their very nature, kitchens are complicated spaces to design. They contain plumbing and electric systems that need to be accounted for and aren't found elsewhere in the residence. And since kitchens are frequently regarded as the "heart of the home," they must embody excellent aesthetics. It's a daunting task—and one that designers take seriously.
Kitchen design gets even more complicated when ADA compliance standards are thrown into the mix. For instance, when accounting for clients who will need an ADA-friendly space, designers must place the kitchen sink no lower than 28" off the ground and no higher than 34". The sink must be unobstructed and no deeper than 5.5". The counter can be no more than 1.5" thick. These requirements are rigorous but necessary for a client to live in home that supports bodily autonomy and enjoyment of the space.
